Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
- Images are not visible to mobile phone users and alternative text is not provided so assistive technology may not access the information. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (Non-Text Content)
- Some web content gets truncated when text is zoomed at different screen resolution which requires scrolling in two dimensions. This fails WCAG 1.4.10 (Reflow)
- Users may experience inconsistent focus when a submenu is opened, During keyboard navigation. This fails WCAG 3.2.1 (On Focus)
- There are no visual cues of drop-down menus, keyboard users may not realise that certain menu items expand into submenus. This fails WCAG 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships)
- Content is blocked by cookie preference icon when browser is zoomed in above 175%. This fails WCAG 1.4.10 (Reflow)
- Some words are written in Non-Standard Abbreviations. This fails WCAG 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships)
- Some links lack file type description. This fails WCAG 2.4.4 (Link Purpose (In Context)).
- Some headings are not presented in logical order. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships), 2.2.2 (Pause, Stop, Hide).
- Our forms lack clear descriptive labels. This fails WCAG 3.3.2 (Labels or Instructions)
- Screen readers may be unable to read additional form contents when selected via keyboard navigation. This fails WCAG 4.1.2 (Name, Role, Value), 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships)
Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations
PDFs and other documents
The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services. Those documents that are essential to our service that were published before 2018 will be added to our roadmap.
Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.
What we’re doing to improve accessibility
We regularly audit and check content on the DGDT website and seek to fix content that fails to meet the WCAG version 2.1 AA standard.
This will ensure our website is fully compliant with WCAG 2.1 AA Standard.
- Providing accessibility training for our staff (in progress)
- Preparation for the introduction of the WCAG 2.2 standard (due September 2024)
- Fixing PDFs and MS Word documents (by September 2024)
- Working with our Cookie Control provider to ensure web content is fully available (by August 2024)
- Redeveloping the templates for DGDT to ensure images are accessible and visible to mobile phone users (by November 2024)
- Redeveloping the templates for DGDT to ensure menus/navigation/focus are all accessible (by November 2024)
- Reworking table content to ensure users do not have to scroll in two dimensions (by September 2024)
Preparation of this accessibility statement
This statement was prepared on 07/06/2024. The statement was last reviewed on 09/05/2024. This website was last tested on 17/05/2024 against the WCAG 2.1 AA standard. This test included the use of our automated accessibility tool, Powermapper (SortSite) and manual testing with assistive technology by our in-house accessibility officer in our digital team.
